Alexis Tsipras' visit to Portugal

Alexis Tsipras, candidate for president of the European Comission, visited Portugal on Saturday 26/04 and spoke at a documentary festival, organized by the Bloco de Esquerda (Left Bloc) in Porto celebrating forty years since the Carnation Revolution.

  1. Marisa Matias (MEP candidate with Bloco de Esquerda) spoke at the event about the popular struggles against Troika policies in the EU South and the importance of strengthening the Left in Europe in the next European elections.

  3. Alexis Tsipras met with Mário Soares, former Prime Minister and President of Portugal in Porto on April 26, 2014.
  4. When Alexis Tsipras noted that ""We will need alliances", Mario Soares responded that a broader coalition of the South of Europe is necessary to break free from the policies of austerity and noted "You can count on me"
  5. A win could also spell movement on Tsipras’ call for a European debt conference: "There is no alternative but to try to renegotiate our debt together similarly to what occurred in London in 1953, where the debts of Germany after World War II were largely forgiven. This would not only be good for indebted countries, but for all of Europe and is the only realistic way out."
  6. He continued, "European citizens must vote against the political forces that support austerity in our countries. A win for the Left in Greece—which would be an historic first—is likely to trigger a "domino effect in Europe."
