Tsipras in Galicia: “We are voting for our lives in these European elections!”
EL PAIS Galicia covered the political rally organized by Alternativa Galega de Esquerda-AGE on Sunday, April 27, 2014 in Santiago de Compostela that featured Alexis Tsipras, candidate on behalf of the European Left for President of the European Commission.
As reported by EL PAIS, the rise in support of SYRIZA has given its President the opportunity to challenge the politicians and bankers responsible for the “rescue” of Greece—one that has led to a major humanitarian crisis. Tsipras believes that the upcoming European elections on May 25th will usher in “a new era for Europe”; “instead of a Europe based on fear and capital markets, it will be come a Europe of solidarity and for the people.”
“In these elections we are not simply voting to increase our number of MEP’s, but we are voting for our very lives,” Tsipras told the crowd to enthusiastic applause. He followed with a greeting in Galician to his supporters in the crowded amphitheater.
Lindia Senra, a MEP candidate on behalf of AGE, highlighted the many similarities that exist between Greece, Portugal and Galicia: youth unemployment has reached staggering heights; more and more people are living in poverty; and privatization reforms of basic human goods, like water, are being introduced for implementation. “The Troika is responsible for all of this—and here in Galicia, the Troika should be called by its true name: the Conservative Party (PP) and its conspirator, the Social-Democrats (PSOE.)
